Indonesia, with all its cultural diversity and
natural wealth, has many uniqueness. One of the strong cultural heritages in
Indonesia is the tradition of drinking herbal medicine. Jamu, which is a
traditional concoction made from plants, spices, and roots, has been an
inseparable part of the lifestyle of people in Indonesia for centuries.
Quoting from the Ministry of Health of the
Republic of Indonesia (Kemenkes), in his post on the @farmalkes Instagram
account on (15/12) said that one of Indonesia's cultures was again recognized
on the world stage. The reason is, the UNESCO Convention Committee for
Intangible Cultural Heritage (WBTB), officially established the Jamu Wellness
Culture or (Jamu Wellness Culture), as the 13th Intangible Cultural Heritage
(WBTB) from Indonesia, on Wednesday (6/12 / 23).
Meanwhile, in 2015 the Ministry of Health had
also previously introduced the National Movement for Fitness with Jamu (Gernas
Bude Jamu). This was done as one of the promotive and preventive efforts in
supporting the National Movement for Healthy Living, as well as preserving the culture
of drinking herbal medicine. Because by drinking jamu regularly, it can improve
family health and fitness. Thus, it can also reduce health costs and improve
public health status.
In addition, the Ministry of Health also hopes
that with the official determination by UNESCO, the Healthy Culture of Jamu as
WBTB, it can strengthen Indonesia's efforts to protect and develop herbal
medicine as a cultural heritage, and be able to contribute to global health and
welfare.
What is the History of Jamu in Indonesia?
Jamu is not only a herbal drink, but also one
of Indonesia's ancestral heritage that has been passed down from generation to
generation, or from time to time. The history of herbal medicine can be traced
back to the glory days of kingdoms in the archipelago such as Majapahit and
Sriwijaya. The practice of traditional medicine continues to develop over time,
and is influenced by various aspects or cultural causes such as Chinese, Arabic
and Indian, which entered Indonesia through trade routes.
As for the use of herbal medicine by the
Indonesian people, according to Ernie H. Purwaningsih in his journal in 2013,
in 2010 the Indonesian people used herbal medicine reaching more than 50%.
Meanwhile, according to the Ministry of Health in its post on the @farmalkes
account, Jamu users in Indonesia reached 79% as an immune system, especially
during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Benefits of Herbs?
The Ministry of Health states that the
definition of Jamu is Natural Medicines in the form of ingredients or
ingredients sourced from traditional knowledge or Indonesian cultural heritage,
which are used to maintain health, improve health, prevent disease, treat,
and/or restore health.
From the definition of herbal medicine above,
it can be seen that the benefits of herbal medicine are considered to have
various health benefits. However, apart from being a traditional Indonesian
medicine, jamu is also known to increase endurance, cleanse toxins in the body,
and relieve various health problems such as flu, colds, or indigestion. Not
only that, herbal drinks can also be said to be an alternative medicine. In
fact, according to the Ministry of Health, the benefits of herbal medicine
divide it into three (3) dimensions, namely health, economic and socio-cultural
benefits.
Maintaining Local Wisdom in the Modern Era
& Loving Jamu Cultural Heritage
Although times are constantly evolving and
changing, the culture of herbal medicine must remain alive and thriving
throughout the ages. This is because a number of modern companies are now
presenting jamu in practical packaging without compromising on the quality and
authenticity of its natural ingredients. This means that it can help maintain
and introduce the existence of jamu to various levels of society, including
those who may have difficulty finding traditional jamu stalls, especially in
this modern era.
Therefore, Indonesians have a responsibility
to preserve the tradition of jamu as an integral part of their cultural
identity. By continuing to develop, maintain and cherish this heritage, jamu
will remain one of Indonesia's natural health wonders.
Thank you, I hope this information can be
useful!
