The Rohingya tribe has been talked about a lot lately, especially in Indonesia. But do you know who they are? They are an ethnic minority group from Myanmar, in the Rakhine state. So far, they have experienced a journey and history that is quite difficult and full of challenges. To find out more, this article will certainly try to explore the historical facts of the Rohingya tribe, and how they ended up fleeing to Indonesia.

A.        Origin of the Rohingya Tribe

The Rohingya are a minority group that is predominantly Muslim, and the language they speak is Rohingya. Although they have lived in the Rakhine region since the 7th century, the Rohingya are not recognized as citizens of Myanmar and face discrimination.

The Rakhine region is said to be very strategic which is the center of trade in Myanmar. And through this trade, of course many migrants from all over the world, especially the Arabs, entered the region. So that the Rohingya ethnicity was created from Muslim traders from the Arabs who settled there.

B.        Controversy in Myanmar

Around the beginning of the 21st century, there was a conflict between the Rohingya tribe and the Myanmar government, which became increasingly fierce. The Myanmar government, claiming and denying the Rohingya's citizenship, imposed discriminatory policies on them. These included restrictions on citizenship rights, freedom of movement, and access to basic services.

C.        Violence and Vagrancy

And around 2017, their situation and conditions became worse and worse. Because when a series of Rohingya militant attacks on Myanmar's security posts were met with cruel treatment or actions from the military. This certainly triggered a wave of violence and then mass expulsion of the Rohingya tribe. Thousands were killed, their homes destroyed, and tens of thousands fled to nearby countries.

D.        Travel to Indonesia

Mostly, a number of Rohingya refugees seek safety and find refuge in neighboring countries. These countries include Bangladesh, Malaysia and Indonesia. They do so out of necessity, despite the dangerous journey of having to cross waters in often unseaworthy boats, facing the risk of losing their lives on the way.

E.        Challenges and living conditions in Indonesia

After they managed to enter Indonesia, the Rohingya tribe certainly did not find it easy to enter and settle down without permission and so on. They had to face various challenges. These include legal uncertainty and limited access to basic services such as education and healthcare. Most of them can live in refugee centers, and try to rebuild their lives while struggling for equal recognition and rights.

F.        Government and Humanitarian Organization Response

The Indonesian government and a number of humanitarian organizations have certainly tried and tried to provide assistance to Rohingya refugees. However, there is still much work to be done to improve their conditions. This humanitarian challenge highlights the importance of regional and international cooperation in handling the refugee crisis.

§    Conclusion

The history of the Rohingya tribe certainly reflects a serious humanitarian tragedy. The reason is, in the face of great challenges, both the Rohingya tribe and recipient countries such as Indonesia need to work together to find a fair and sustainable solution that will improve. And the International Community should also participate in providing support and assistance for those who are suffering from conflict and expulsion in their country, Myanmar.
